Brian Eno, the well-known British composer, was the person who defined Generative Music as we think of it today. Many of his works involve systemic compositional elements-- and that is not to "decode" them. Composing in systems can be lots of fun-- it pulls one in sometimes. While looking for musicians to perform Terry Riley's "In C", a modern improvisatory masterpiece, I was not finding a response to make the live version happen. As a coder, I wondered if there might be...

AN UNAUTHORIZED TRIBUTE TO RAPOON BY VARIOUS ARTISTS Why pay tribute to Robin Storey's Rapoon? As a listener, Robin's music was immediately interesting to me, because drone music as a genre was something I hadn't yet heard. Soon, I became captivated by this conversation between sounds-- samples interacting, some looped, others making unique or shorter appearances. Technically, then, this was musique concrete-- or largely that. It was also listenable-- very "musical" in a traditional...

Thomas Park took several scores of recordings of machines made using a contact microphone, in high fidelity, and ran them through a program that adds random processes to the sounds. He chose the 100 best outtakes, and trimmed them to make them usable. These sounds are fun for listening, and would be ideal for using as elements in music or sound design. If you would like to embark on a live mixing adventure, you can try mixing the first 30 sounds in real time with "The Machine Shop" .

"Sovereign" is mystified's tribute to Rapoon's excellent "Cold War: Drum 'N' Bass" double cd, out on Caciocavallo Records, 2001. Thomas of Mystified has been listening to Rapoon's album quite a bit of late, and inspired by it and recent international events, felt it would be appropriate to create an album hearkening back to the original-- though to resurrect or banish a spectre, that is one of the album's central questions.

Music can seem both real and unreal, and its ability to render certain scenarios and situations depends in part on what means are used. One way to add to a sense of "reality" is to use actual recordings of atmospheres-- field recordings. This album, "Nocturne", is a combination of field recordings, phonographic collages, and sample work, created primarily to evoke places and times important to the composer. This recording was recorded live in November of 2009 and assembled January 2010. Check the back cover art for more information. Featured artists are: 1. Thanatomitsu V.02 (aka Kortane Cortex) on Yamaha PSR48 with analog pedal 2. Thanatogushi ID (aka Ayato) on DSR2000 with analog guitar pedals and bent drum machine

For several years I was fortunate enough to be a remote dj for San Francisco's great Community Radio Station, BFF. I curated a Generative Electronic Music show, giving it my traditional moniker, "Synthetic Sounds". I wanted to share on this page some of my shows from the 2022 season. Here is the text from my profile page at BFF: 'Thomas is a dj who is a musician who is a coder who dj's, writes music, and codes, and often does all three at the same time (if not 2 of the three at the...

"Fractal Diner 3" is part of a continuing series of Treetrunk Records compilations based on fractal and generative music. The purpose of this and similar compilations is to highlight artists' uses of different programs and means for music creation. Four artists are represented on "Fractal Diner 3". Each wrote music using different composing techniques. Image-based generation and several fractal / generative programs were used, as were other means.

Here are some live recordings, done in one take, with no overdubs. These were recorded in Loud at 7th studio, early morning 01.14.2023. The title refers to the silence in the part of Saint Louis where Thomas lives, in the year 2023 (part of the Covid era).

Android In Motion and mystified agreed to work separately on material for a split release. Though some time passed, and communication faltered, eventually in the holiday season of 2008 the two artists got back in touch, each with a set of excellent music. Treetrunk hopes you enjoy this split for its variety and quality.

Many songs and records have been written about Africa. I wanted to create something quite sincere, in fact, and to use my remaining knowledge of Swahili phrases and their pronunciation. What is our real connection to this place? For one thing, life emerged in the Tigris and Euphrates river valley. Africa is the origin of human life as we know it. And I have come to think of its endemic cultures differently as I get older. I call them early cultures, I call them authentic cultures. I no longer...

In 2019, Cousin Silas gave Thomas Park permission to remix his wonderful longform album, "Long Decay". Thomas extracted loops from the tracks of that album, and using only these sounds, created iterations. These iterations were assembled with the help of a Python code called "The Reanimator", written by Park, which creates generative loop assemblages.

Thomas Park used his Generative Python code, tweaking it a bit, to create these twisting dub tapestries. Most of the sounds were taken from Eno/Byrne's remix project, from some time ago, through which the stems to "A Secret Life" and "Help Me Somebody" were offered through cc-license.

Following the success of "Particular Streams Remixes 1" and "Particular Streams Remixes 2", Thomas wanted to go another round, and created an open call for remixes using only material from his "Particular Streams" release. These sounds were collected one summer in a low-rent South Side Saint Louis apartment. Thomas feels the sounds are very generative and evocative of living in that place at that time. He is very pleased with the remixes he received for this round...

"Altered Signals 2" is essentially an E.P., though it was created by remixing a full-length release. This remix E.P. contains 5 techno remixes of drone tracks originally appearing in "Altered Signals" (Darkwinter, 2008). Beats, percussion sounds and electronic sequences add special flavor to the ambient tracks, making them especially listenable.

For Treetrunk's 400th and final netrelease, Thomas Park offers a documentary, detailing the history of the netlabel. There are also 5 original prints, based on a Treetrunk Records logo, and some other supplemental materials. Thomas would like to sincerely thank all who have shared their music on Treetrunk, and the many hundreds of thousands who listened, as well-- not to mention the fine people at archive.org, for all of their hosting efforts over the years. The plan is to keep the website up...

According to Ancient Egyptian myth, every night the God Ra journeys through the underworld, where he fights an important battle. He must win this battle and complete his journey for the sun to rise the next morning in Egypt. The anonymous collective The Tribe Of Astronauts, long fascinated with Ancient Egypt, have assembled an EP-length ambient piece sonically exploring Ra's journey.

A delightful aspect of the internet is the ability to take on a different persona, an alter ego, or become that mysterious, incognito person behind the sunglasses (or the avatar). It seems that being masked and anonymous is a pastime those of a higher order intelligence particularly enjoy--just for the sheer fun of it. Of course, musicians take full advantage of this capability as well, recording under various names to suit different genres of music, or just to free themselves from an artistic...
